Using multiple SMTP servers for outgoing mail in Mozilla Thunderbird

What if you use your computer (laptop) in different networks (work, home, ...) and consequently need a different SMTP server for your outgoing mail in Mozilla Thunderbird? You could change the SMTP server in the "account settings", every time it is needed, but that involves more mouse clicks and keystrokes than you would like. With the Buttons! Thunderbird extension you can add a special drop down button to the toolbar so you would only need two mouse clicks to change the SMTP server.

What you need to do:

  • Install the Buttons! Thunderbird extension. Normally you need to restart Thunderbird to complete the installation.
  • Customize the toolbar: right click on the toolbar and select "customize"
  • Drag and drop the "Select SMTP!" button in the listing to the place in the toolbar where you want the drop down button.
  • Go to "edit" > "account settings", select "Outgoing server (SMTP)" on the left hand side of the dialog box. Click on the button "Advanced" on the right hand side. In the resulting dialog box you can add as many SMTP servers as you like/need.
  • At this point you could think everything needed is set up, like I did the first time. But actually Thunderbird won't use the SMTP server you select in the drop down button. You also need to change the settings of every email account, so they would use dynamic SMTP server instead of a static one.
Go back to the "account settings", do the following for every account you want to change the outgoing SMTP server of. Select "server settings" and press the "advanced" button. Go to the "SMTP" tab and select "use default server" in the drop down list, which makes you use the "dynamic" SMTP server.
  • Maybe a restart of Thunderbird is needed to make the changes take effect.

Now you should be able to change the outgoing SMTP server with the fresh button in the toolbar.

One update to these directions is that the "default SMTP server" parameter is now (as of Tbird 1.5) simply in the "Account Settings" window and not under account settings >> server settings >> advanced.

Thank you so much! There were five of us in my office trying to figure out how to get Thunderbird to do this; your instructions worked perfectly.
